PART 3: MAINTAINING

-maintaining our fundamentals

-maintaining our defense

-maintaining our special teams

-maintaining our bodies

-maintaining our minds

-preparing for games & competing

Closeouts

In a staggered stance, you can reach the shooter, but you are giving up an angle.

In a squared stance, you are not giving angles, but you cant reach the shooter.

So what we do, is play both.

Against shooters, we want to closeout with a staggered stop. This way we can run them off the line and force them out of their comfort zone.

Against drivers, we want to chop our feet and closeout wide. This way we can take away their driving angles and force them to shoot.

Roster Diversification

You want 3-4 sure things. Guys who can shoot, dribble, pass and defend at an average level. The Reece Johnsons and the Ben Dorfmans.

Than you want 3-4 guys where you might need to fix one thing, whether it be grades or shooting or finishing.

Than on the back end, you want 2-3 guys with elite athletic tools that could blossom with added strength and fundmaentals.

Shooting Faults

 #1 HAND POSITIONING FAULT

  • We want the middle of the ball to cut the middle of the hand in half  "split the ball in half"
  • We want the thumb and pinky to funnel the ball to the shooting finger
  • The hand positioning may need to be fixed at the beginning of the shot and at the end of the shot
  • This can be seen when the shooter is missing side to side
  • This can be fixed with one handed shooting

#2 WRIST FLEXTION FAULT
  • We want the wrist to reach extension (to prevent shoulder extension)
  • We want the wrist to "snap" into flexion
  • This can be seen when the shooter is missing short
  • This can be fixed by queing backspin on the ball
#3 ELBOW FAULT
  • We want the elbow to move up the energy line at the same time that the wrist is moving out
  • This can be seen when players miss long, or shoot the arc flat
  • This again, can be fixed with one arm shooting
#4 SHOULDER FAULT
  • This is correlated to the joints above it
  • If the wrist can extend, the shoulder over extends
  • If the elbow dosent move up, the shoulder wont extend
  • This can be fixed with form shooting where the shooter finishes on their toes in full extension
#5 CORE FAULT
  • We want the core to maintain erect spinal posture
  • This ensures that energy transfers through the abdominal muscles without leaking
  • This can be see with poor posture in the shot or tight shoulders
  • This can be fixed with Mark Price Shooting
#6 HIPS FAULT
  • We dont want our hips to change in depth very much
  • This would be seen in over squatting before the shot, which is rare
#7 RHYTMM FAULT
  • We want the legs to drive the shot and the hands to guide it
  • Specifically, we want the achilles, gastronemius and soleus to contract, sending a wave through our body
  • The shoulder, elbow, and wrist should be able to ride this wave
  • This can be fixed with tom bennet shooting
#8 BALANCE FAULT
  • We want the body to be balanced on the balls of the feet
  • We dont want lean forwards or the side
  • This can be fixed by setting a wide base and bringing the wide foot towards the set foot

Skill Development

Its either shooting, or finishing.

If he can shoot, he probably needs help organizing his feet and making reads in the paint

If he can finish, he probably needs help organizing his feet and shooting the jump shot.

If he cant shoot or finish, he shouldn't be on the team.

Unselfish

If you make the right read all of the time, on offense and defense, you are not going to look very "sexy." But your team will win a lot of games..

DONT WORRY ABOUT MAKING "A" PLAY, MAKE "THE" PLAY

Baseline Drives

Baseline Drives are great for us, and not great against us.

When the ball goes middle, everybody can see ball you man.

When the ball goes baseline, it turns the "shell" inside out.

Chatter

Our culture is communicated with chatter.

How we talk to each other during training will dictate what the expectations of our training is like.

The leaders on the team have to know that the HC will hold them accountable if standards are not met.

Foot Organization

 Its all about...

  1. Getting the first two steps organized
  2. Getting the last two steps organized
FIRST TWO STEPS

We want to always be a threat to shoot. Think shoot first. We want to anchor our shooting foot, whether it be left or right to the ground. With our other foot, we want to create a base, before bringing that foot into the center in order to generate upward momentum.

LAST TWO STEPS

We want to gather the ball to our outside foot relative to the rim. As we gather the ball to the outside foot, we can read the "point of attack." If we have space to the rim, get there. If we are sensing contact, create the two foot base. If we are cutoff, back pivot and look to pass or finish with a hook.

Mental Toughness

PART 1: TRUSTING SELF-2

  2. This means specifically, total immersion into the present moment
  3. Full trust of yourself and your instincts

PART 2: ACCEPTING SELF-1

  1. To get to full trust of self-2, you must reconcile with all of the machinations of self-1
  2. The past; seeing the past for what it is and dealing with your own judgments about it (failure is feedback, victory is validation)
  3. The future; balancing expectations with the reality of the unknown (I hope I do great, vs I am great)
  4. Understanding fight or flight. Why are my thoughts the way they are? What is their purpose? Seeing them as a river
  5. Imagery. imagine yourself playing
