Win Forevor

The idea behind win forever, is to build individuals and teams that sustain excellence over time. We do this by establishing our core values as daily habits.

COMPETE

To compete means to find the edge in everything you do. Its to to determine something worth achieving and than overcome the obstacles in the way of achieving it.

CONNECT

To connect means to value the multiplying effect of a team. A true team can achieve exponentially more than just one person. To be a true team, trust is required.

ENJOY

To enjoy means to fight adversity with positivity. When you are a competitor and a team, there will be setbacks. Positive people stay the course through these setbacks.

W.I.N

To W.I.N means to focus on what is important now. When you have a goal, in can be tempting to focus on the outcome. Dont worry about the outcome, worry about the process and what you can do now to achieve your goal.

THE FOUNDATION

As a program, we need to establish these habits in our program. Once these habits are established, we can bring in like minded people.

GOOD TO GREAT

With the right people on the bus, we can begin to build leadership. Leadership is when more than one person understands the teams vision. This is when the multiplying effect begins.

BUILT TO LAST

With leaders in place the multiplying effect can realize its full potential. When everyone in our program accepts ownership of the team vision, long term  excellence can be sustained. The players and coaches become interchangeable. United in our vision, we are all leaders.

Than our program will Win Forevor.

Breakfast Club

Our practices are 90 minutes. Our practices also cover everything you need to be successful. If you want to improve further, it is through shooting.

Breakfast club is at 7am, 3 days a week. You shoot for 45-60 minutes than go to breakfast together in the dining hall.

Breakfast Club Shooting:

Off the dribble shooting

5 before 4 shooting

Louisville Shooting

Bird Shooting

Australian Shooting

*all records will be recorded

(Obviously the start time will be relative to the first class at the school)

Sprinting

 Its all sprinting.

On offense, we want to sprint to the rim. We are going to set a screen so that the ballhandler can sprint to the rim. If that is taken away, we are going to hit the screener for a sprint to the rim. If that is taken away, we are going to hit the perimeter player for a shot or sprint to the rim.

In this way, we are a “sprint” first offense.

Defensively, we want to take away all sprints. We find ways to take away the offenses sprint to the rims.

Its all Starts and Stops

Basketball is simply a game of starting and stopping.

Starting to run, and than stopping. Jumping, and than landing. Sliding and changing directions. Our strength and conditioning and fundamental development needs to reflect this:

RUNNING

Running applies in our first step. The whole idea is to find an angle, and than sprint for 2-3 steps into that angle. To improve our running, we need to establish equilibrium in our force couples. Our quads, hamstrings, glutes and calves all need to fire appropriately for our running become optimal.

STOPPING

Stopping applies to our finishing at the rim. After finding an angle and sprinting into it, we need to come to a stop. To stop, we need to receive force optimally through our quads, hams, glutes and calves.

JUMPING

We need to be explosive in our jump shot and our first step. This requires balance, deriving from the nervous system and tendon stiffness, which creates elasticity.

SLIDING

We need glute/ham mobility and strength to slide efficiently.

CHAGING DIRECTION

We need both core strength and a high functioning nervous system. With those two systems firing, our body will be able to process information faster.

Standards of A&A (Tomllin)

 https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/30618415/wait-did-mike-tomlin-say-deciphering-steelers-coach-many-slogans

This is an awesome post abut Mike Tomlin and his slogans about his standards of attitudes and actions.

The Fight Song

Singing the fight song is awesome. We sing the fight song in the locker room after every win. Freshman and transfers have to sing the fight song solo, at various intervals of the team retreat.

THREE PHASE BASKETBALL

We dont like to say that we are an offensive team or a defensive team. Our goal is to win the conference championship. This means we will have to be great at all three phases of the game; offense defense and special teams.

OFFENSE

Everything that we do on offense has to beat STOPS. Less is more. Make sure that each of our actions can beat the STOPS. Otherwise dont run them.

DEFENSE

We have to be able to defend drive and kick, play through the post, catch and shoot and pick and rolls. Its all built off of that. If we can stop those four things, we will be good.

SPECIAL TEAMS

We use the term "special teams" to define all transitions, rebounding, all set plays, all in-bounds plays and all strategies concerning time and scores. We need to gain possessions, execute set plays and understand time + score situations.

SELLING OUR SOUL

We can win with love and positivity. Just like Luke Skywalker, we dont have to tilt over to the darkside.

Darkside coaches are a negative archetype in our profession. Bob Knight, Frank Martin. The screamers and yellers. These guys are losers.

Maybe they can win a game, or maybe even have a good season. But the will NOT Win Forevor. They cant. They damage the people around them to achieve short term goals.

I understand the temptation. As coaches we are adults, and the players are kids. It is possible to bully them into have short term success. A coach can get positive results through bullying. But it comes at a cost. And that cost is resentment. To much resentment and permanent damage can be caused. And that damage will prevent you from WINNING FOREVOR.

So go ahead, bully your players to win some games or even to have some good seasons. I, however, choose to coach with love, with respect and with positivity. I choose to Win Forevor.

THE CIRCLE

We stand in a circle for every open up and put up. The circle represents our circle of trust. Everyone in the circle is moving the team towards one vision, one goal. They all value the same thing.

We squeeze hands and pass energy to the right, into a circle. (Or maybe do the Terrance thing.) This symbolizes our motto. When we give to each other, it all comes back around to us. As long as everyone in the circle is connected. When one person breaks the chain, it breaks the trust of the group. Give to the team, and trust that it will come back to you.

When the energy has passed around the circle, we know that it is safe for us to open up. We are free to express what we are going to give to the team. How we are going to make ourselves better, so that the team can get better.

At the end of the week, we complete the circle with our put ups. We give each other the validation at the end of the week. Just like we put the energy out to the team with our squeeze, now it comes back to you with the put up.

Monday is basically prepwork for the circle. We have our staff meetings, we have our captains meetings, we have our team meeting. We set our intentions with our meditations. Than we enter the circle and commit...

... and at the end of the week, we find closure.

-----

Wouldn't it be crazy if the players could vote somebody out of the circle?

The K.O.C

All coaching is, is being the KING of conflict - Bill Parcells

There are two extremes for handling conflict. There is the screaming, yelling in your face extreme and there is the face to face in your office way of handling conflict.

I want to be in the middle. I want to be direct, but not in a yelling kind of way. Handle conflict as immediately as possible.
